Silent Tears

by Rhonda Erickson - January 2008

I looked in your face, and held you close to me the day you were born.

A brand new puppy, so tiny, helpless, cuddly, wiggly and warm.

You snuggled right into my heart that day,and fit in the curve of my arm.

Your little pink tongue tickled my ears, and left wet kisses on my cheek.

Eyes and ears still sealed shut, and tawny brown fur so shiny and sleek.

I was there when you took your first steps, wobbly and weak.

A sweet and sassy personality emerged as you grew by leaps and bounds.

Bravely exploring your world, learning, discovering new sights and sounds.

The colors of your coat now changing, brindle shades of reds and browns.

Trimmed in snow white, like sprinkles of cinnamon and sugar on a sweet bun.

Your bright eyes ever curious, the color of honey sparkling in the sun.

My Cinnamon dog, you brought into my life a bundle of joy and fun.

I laughed as your loving nature was met by everyone with such surprise.

Could it be? A big, bad Pit Bull dog, with those sweet and gentle eyes.

To know you was to love you, soon they would all come to realize.

Not a vicious bone in your body, just a big tender heart, loyal and kind.

You comforted me when I was sad, and my loneliness was left behind.

A friend and confidant, days and years of happiness was ours to find.

Too soon they were to end, as I held closely to your lifeless body and cried.

My fingers stroked your silky coat, my arms cradling you against my side.

No more warmth, or tickling wet kisses, your eyes forever closed as you died.

Inside my heart was broken, silent tears fell softly on your beautiful face.

Captured even in death, a gentle soul, and faithful spirit of loving grace.

My Cinnamon dog, my little Cinabun, my devoted Bunhead, I can never replace.
