Hello Doggie Lovers,
I’m Maggie, a black Labrador Retriever. I live with my Daddy, Earl, in a small town in North Carolina. I came to live with my Daddy Earl, and my Momma Ruth, when I was about a year old. My home had been a barrel out in an open field. My life consisted of nothing, but being chained to the barrel.
I was one lucky girl the day my Daddy Earl came to see me. He decided to take me home with him. You know what? A great surprise was waiting for me. I became a house labbie, living in the house with Momma Ruth and Daddy Earl. Momma Ruth said "This dog's not going to sleep outside." Folks, there is quite a difference between living in a barrel and being lonesome all day and living in a nice clean house with two people who adore you. My goodness - “I was in Heaven.”
This was the beginning of a wonderful life for me. We had a great time together. I was especially fond of my Daddy Earl and Momma Ruth would tease him, saying he had stolen me away from her.
Overtime, sadly, my Momma Ruth, became very ill. I was given a job to help take care of her. I’ll bet you’re wondering what kind of job qualifications I would have. I'm very qualified to be a caregiver. My job consisted of helping Momma Ruth get from the car to the house. You see, I would stand behind the car until she got out. Then, I would walk beside her to the door, just in case she might need my help. This was my job, whether I went in the car with her, or if I stayed home and waited for her to return. If I went with her, I was already at the car. If I waited for her to return, I would run to the car to meet her. She was very impressed with my caregiver abilities.
When Momma Ruth was taken to Hospice, I was allowed to visit her and stay in the room with her. Sometimes, I was allowed to get upon the bed with her. Sometimes, the nurses would even put me upon the bed with her.
I was given a job at Hospice too. When I went to see her, I was to greet all the staff first and then go to Momma Ruth’s room. My station was under her bed. I had to be close by, because, you see, when Momma Ruth had trouble breathing, I would whine and this seemed to really help her feel better.
On the night my Momma Ruth passed away, me and Daddy Earl and the family, were getting ready to leave Hospice. Daddy Earl ask me if I wanted to tell Momma Ruth goodbye.
I said, "Yes." I went over and put my paws up on her bed and touched my nose to Momma Ruth’s cheek. It was my way of saying “Goodbye, My Sweet Momma Ruth – You’ve been a good Momma.” My Daddy Earl and his family were very startled by what I did, because I had never done this before.
On that night, I knew my life had changed. I had a new job now. It was taking care of my Daddy Earl. But, you know, for a while, it was hard for me to remember I didn’t need to go to the car to help Momma Ruth into the house.
Me and Daddy Earl have had to move on with life. We still miss Momma Ruth very much, and always will.
Do you want me to tell you a secret? I don’t let Daddy Earl get out of my sight, if I can help it. We are like “Two bugs in a Rug.” "He’s the best Daddy a girl could have!"
Maggie
