Maggie Goes Camping

Hello Doggie Lovers,

Some time ago, Me and my Daddy Earl went camping with Daddy Earl’s son and his family. Me and Daddy Earl traveled in our car and his son traveled in his truck and towed a rubber boat behind the truck. We were going to a campground near Bristol, Tennessee. We planned to float the river and fish and have a laid-back time together. Man, I love this kind of thing.

After we arrived at the cabin and unloaded our supplies, Daddy Earl and his son decided to take the rubber boat up to a place where they could unload the boat. From there, we would float back down the stream to the cabin. We would do some fishing along the way. Of course, I was raring and ready to go.

To my dismay, Daddy Earl decided to leave me in the cabin while they went to check out the river. I thought, “Shucks, this is not good.” I had looked forward to an afternoon of rafting on the river. It seemed, since Daddy Earl’s daughter-in-law and children were coming later in the afternoon, I could be a welcoming committee for them.

I heard him calling his daughter-in-law. He said, "Maggie's in the cabin. Don't let her out."

After settling me in the cabin, Daddy Earl and his son set out for a bit of good fishing. I don’t know much about distance, but I’m guessing the cabin was a mile from the main road. They took Daddy Earl’s son’s truck as it had the boat behind it. That makes sense, don’t it? Daddy Earl left his car at the cabin with me. I heard them travel on out that old road. They were going to set that old boat in the river and float back down to the cabin. And I was expected to stay in this old cabin while they were gone. Shucks!!!

I’m telling you, I was so carried away with aggravation. I was moping around like you wouldn’t believe. I had to figure out a way to get out of that old cabin.

I went to the door and whined to get out, but nothing happened, so I laid down and begin to pout. Then, I got to thinking. That door had a levered lock on it. I thought if I could get my paw just right over that lever and pull down, that silly door might open and I would be home free. It was worth a try. So, I went about my task in a diligent manner. To my surprise, the door behaved exactly as I thought it would. I stood on my back feet with front paws on the lever and down it went and – Bingo – the door opened.

Now, my next task was to look for Daddy Earl. I searched all around the cabin and grounds. No Daddy Earl anywhere. I guess they were still rowing on the river. Our car was there. Suddenly, an idea popped into my head. I would get in that car and wait for him. I knew he would be back. He would not leave me in that old cabin forever. I went over to the car and stood up on my hind legs and looked in. I circled around the car, and to my surprise, a back window was open. I thought… How am I going to get in that window? It took a little figuring, but if I could jump on top of the car and get on the roof, I might be able to get in that window. So that’s exactly what I did. Took a little effort though. I maneuvered myself from the top and squeezed myself into the window and plopped onto my nice travel bed. After succeeding in such a brilliant endeavor, I decided I needed to pass the time with a little nap until my Daddy Earl came back.

Suddenly, I woke to the sound of a car coming down the road to the cabin. I thought, “Oh Goody, here comes my buddy.” But it was not Daddy Earl. It was his daughter-in-law. They didn’t see me in the car, although I was wagging my tail furiously. I guess I didn’t bark very loud, because they didn’t appear to know I was in the car. They went into the cabin and came flying back out and calling on their phone. They were all wigged out! WHAT WAAAAAS THE PROBLEM?

They were telling someone on the phone that I was not in the cabin and to hurry back. I was missing! I wasn’t missing. I was right here in Daddy Earl’s car.

Well, a few short minutes later, I saw Daddy Earl and his son running toward the cabin, calling me to the top of their lungs. They were all in a dither. I kept wagging my lab tail as hard as I could to let him know where I was. He just kept calling me, like he didn’t see me. I wished he would look my way. “HEY – OVER HERE BUDDY!” Everyone was calling me to the top of their lungs, running around like you wouldn’t believe.

Daddy Earl kept saying he could not believe this. He knew he had left me in the cabin. He kept asking the question – “How could she have gotten out?” He said he was afraid I had run out the road to the highway, trying to find him. I could tell he was worried sick – running around – calling my name. Poor Daddy Earl…… He kept saying, “How could she have gotten out?” I kept saying “Daddy Earl, I opened the door and walked out.” “LOOK OVER HERE. I’M IN THE CAR” . My lab tail was wagging so hard, I thought it would break off.

Finally, after such a commotion, he looked my way and saw my black tail going ninety miles an hour. He ran over to the car. He was so glad to see me, I thought he would cry. Funny …… I felt the very same way. He opened that door and I jumped out. We jumped for joy – dancing and laughing and hugging. I’ll tell you, it was a happy scene.

He said, “Maggie, I thought you were lost.” I said, “Daddy Earl, I was never lost. I knew exactly where I was. You just couldn’t find me.”

Daddy Earl says he doesn’t remember leaving the window down in the car, so I guess God must have rolled down that window. He knew my Daddy Earl needed me. “Good Friends are Hard to come by!”

Sincerely,

Maggie
